Mrs Annie Brierley of 39 Clayton St Bradford, Manchester has received news that her Husband ,L/Sgt 9246 John Brierley has been killed at Trones
wood. His sister, Miss Brierley, of 6
Woodward St, Ancoats, received postcards from two
of his comrades on 22-11-16,stating that Sgt Brierley
was hit in the head, by shrapnel, Pte 8797 Pearson said that he and Pte 9343
Gaskell dressed his wound, and all the time Sgt Brierley shouted encouragement
to his men. After having his wound dressed, Sgt Brierley carried on towards Trones
wood. Pte 8230 Alexander Mackie told us that Sgt Brierley was next to him when
he was shot through the head and died instantly. Pte Mackie was later got killed,
on 11th October. Sgt Brierley was a policeman in the Manchester force. Son of
Thomas and Sarah, Ann Brierley.
Pte 8453 John Bennett of 10 Barwick St Harpurhey has been
killed at trines wood 10/11 July 1916. A labourer.
Pte 8439 Harry Birchall of Clifford Rd Ollerton, nr Knutsford
was killed at Trones wood on 10th July aged 26. Leaves a

killed at Trones wood on the 10th July. A married
Pte 9309 Charlie Willet of 5 Malt St Hulme has been killed at Trones
wood on the 10th July, aged 20. Worked for Rhodes, Rawlings and Shaw of Manchester.
Pte 8853 Frank Renny Rule of Accrington has been killed at
Trones wood 10th July

was killed at Trones wood 10th July, aged 23.Parents: Cecil and Caroline.

for Horrocks and Crewdson. A member of Sale golf, rugby and cricket clubs. Parents: Joseph and Mary.
Pte 8439 Henry Birchall [Harry] of Chelford Rd,
Knutsford was killed 10th July aged 26. Leaves a widow, Sophia.
Worked for Chorlton bros Manchester. Parents: 61, Hall St Moston.
A grave registration unit found his grave in Bernafay wood and reburied him.

Pendleton was killed at Trones wood 10th July aged 30. Played
football for Broughton rangers and Pendlebury FC.
Sgt 8705 Louis Linney of “The hollies”, Clayton Bridge,
reported missing 10th/11th July at Trones wood. Worked for Haslams
Pte 8873 John, Edward Staley of 15 Sudbury St Harpurhey was killed at Trones
wood 10th July aged 21.

Cpl 8955 Leslie Wright of "Oakdene" Parsonage Rd
Heaton Moor was seriously wounded on 8th July aged 21. Educated
at Stockport Grammar and a member of Heaton Mersey lacrosse club. Awarded the Military medal.

Park St West
Gorton was reported missing at Trones wood 10th/11th July and was listed
as captured and a prisoner of war at Dulmen has now died of influenza at
Sprottau camp Germany, on the 1st December 1918 whilst awaiting
repatriation. Grave located in Dittersdorf POW cemetery. Aged
23. Parents: Frederick, William and Lucy.
Pte 8200 Albert Jones of 13 Bank St Hulme was taken prisoner at
Trones wood,10th July, now in Dulmen, Germany.

L/Cpl 8701 John Leach of 26 Carver St Chorlton on Medlock was taken prisoner at
Trones wood, on 10th July 1916. Now in Dulmen, Germany.

Pte 8396 Henry Brumfitt of 174 York St Hulme was admitted
to 2nd Australian general hospital, Wimereaux,on 10th July suffering from shell
shock . Aged 20.

sent to 26th general hospital with Gun Shot Wounds to hand and knee received at
Trones wood on the10th July .
8402 Thomas, William Batey of Rose cottages, Grasmere
Cumberland was taken prisoner at Trones wood 11th July.
Pte 9146 Cyril, Edwin Davies of 76 Highfield Rd Pendleton was captured
and wounded at Trones wood on 10th/11th July, later dying of his wounds on 22nd July,

He was raised by his mothers brother Mr John Davies
and his wife Clara since he was 1yr old.
Cpl 8534 Thomas, Arthur Ellison of 2 Queens Rd Urmston, a
reserve machine gunner, has been reported missing at Trones wood on 10th/11th
July aged 21. Pte 8935 Worthington
last saw Cpl Ellison on the edge of Trones wood, he was badly wounded. He spoke
to him, but he didn’t reply, so he left him, and went to help his wounded
brother. Pte Worthington went on to win the military medal, and later took a
commission, in the Manchester Regiment. Parents: Thomas and Elizabeth.
Pte 8466 Frederick, Guest Crowe
of 81 Bignor St Hightown Manchester
was captured and wounded at Trones wood on the 9th July. He died of his wounds
at 8am on 26 September. Buried in Ohrdruf camp cemetery with
full military honours. Mother: Sarah. An accountant.
His brother, Randall Byrne Crowe was killed in action 2-11-18 serving with the
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Pte 8906 John Tighe of 3 Ross St Hyde Rd Gorton fell at
Trones wood 9th July aged 19. Educated at Ross place school,
Gorton. Worked for Peel, Watson and co.
Pte 8871 Harry, Norman Snape of 106 Langworthy Rd Pendleton has been
taken prisoner at Trones wood 10th July aged 23.Worked in the counting house at
Winterbottoms book cloth company.
Act/Cpl 8626 William, Leslie Haddock of 19 Matlock St Peel green Manchester
has received shrapnel wound to the shoulder at Trones wood on the 9th July and
has been sent to 3rd General hospital at Boulogne. Now in the David Lewis Northern hospital ,Liverpool aged 23.

Pte 8364 Walter Ashton of 170 Oxford Rd Dukinfield has been
reported missing at Trones wood on the 10th July aged 24.A pawnbrokers
assistant. Member of Foundry St Primitive Methodist church.

Pte 8426 Uriah Booth of 31 Radium St Oldham Rd Manchester
has been wounded at Trones wood on the 10th July, and was sent to Merryflatts
war hospital .Aged 22.A glass beveller for Baxendales Ltd. Parents: Uriah and
Pte 9269 Frederick Hatton of 3 Turner St Openshaw was wounded in the left ankle
by shrapnel at Trones wood on 10th July. Also, suffering from shell shock he
was sent to the 3rd General hospital at Rouen.
After leaving hospital, he was posted to the 22nd battalion on the 9th
of July and wounded in the left ankle by shrapnel, at Trones wood on the 10th
July. Also suffering from shell shock, he was sent to the 3rd General hospital
at Rouen. After
leaving hospital, he was posted to the 22nd battalion on the 9th August. He was
concussed by a shell on the 2nd of September and sent to the 21st Casualty Clearing
Station. He rejoined the 17th battalion from the 21st CCS on the 29th September.
During the heavy fighting at Flers ,on 12th October,
he suffered Gun Shot Wounds to his arm, leg and head and died at the 38th CCS
two days later [14th October ] aged 24.
