Casualties of the 1st July 1916

Of the total of 900 Officers and men who took part in the Assault on the village of Montauban on the 1st July, more than 350 were killed or wounded. The Officer casualties are well documented-usually in the Battalion War Diary and official histories, but what of the men ?.  A typical entry in a war diary would read:-1 Officer (Lt Smith) and 6 Men killed today by Shell fire. It was extremely rare if the men were mentioned by name and almost impossible to ascertain the nature of their deaths-something their loved ones, back home very often wanted to know. If they were lucky, their Platoon Officer would write to the wives or parents of the men killed explaining the circumstances but, more often than not the exact details of their death were omitted to spare the often gruesome details.

As the casualty list mounted, the local newspapers in Manchester printed details of the men killed, wounded and missing as families at home became more and more anxious for news of their loved ones.

Group member Mack has spent hours painstakingly researching the newspapers held, on microfiche at the Central library in Manchester. Adding to this information from Soldiers records, Local newspapers and numerous other sources, a pen picture of these men, their lives and ultimately their fate on the 1st July has emerged. The list is, by no means complete and will, no doubt be added to in time to come as more sources become available.

It is a testament to Mack’s hard work, dedication and thorough research that the men listed below are Not Forgotten.
